A Renaissance Portrait {Austin Renaissance Photographer}

I’ve been working on a fun little “assignment” I was given a challenge to create an image using the phrase “Style is self plagiarism.” I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to set up for the challenge. I’ve always loved all things Renaissance. I have made countless sets of garb for myself and others. Last fall I made a portrait of a good friend wearing one of the gowns that I made. It’s design was based on a gown that Elizabeth I wore in a portrait I’d seen. Liz, my model, was perfect. She looked the part and gave the portrait life. I named it Elizabeth I.

So I thought I could do a selfie of myself in my Renaissance gown or ask my sweet daughter if she’d like to help.  She almost always does.  So we pulled out her cute little Melissa and Doug dress-up Renaissance gown and I made her some accessories to complete the outfit and set up the studio.  I used a wonderful (and cheap) piece of fabric I found at a local fabric store for the backdrop and we were ready.  K is usually pretty great when she’s posing for me.  This image is from the first half of our little session:

However, like most children, she loses interest pretty quick.  Plus I started shooting later in the evening.  Too close to bedtime I suppose.  We were shooting and she was laughing and the next thing I knew there were tears.  She wanted to be done.  In just a matter of seconds.

So I told her we could be through.  It was bedtime anyway.  She cried harder.  It’s funny how once her tears start they are HUGE and hard to stop.  I asked her to sit on the studio’s little sofa and calm down and I went into the closet to find my gown so I could try a few selfies after I put the kids to bed.  When she realized I was going to take my own photo in my gown she was ready to help again.  The tears were gone.  We got several good images that worked well for the challenge, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to do some selfies before I strike the set.  LOL
